ANDY WALKER ILLUSTRATOR

Born September 1964, just in time for Season 2 of the classic series! I pursued art from an early age and hit a competition bonanza between the ages of 10 -14, the peak of which was winning a full-size Dalek in a Walls Ice Cream Dalek Death Ray competition in 1975; I was a little disappointed to find it made of wood and a bit out of proportion but gained some street credibility as it coincided more or less with “Genesis of the Daleks”!

I did a year’s Foundation Course at Loughborough College of Art and Design in 1983/84, then specialised in illustration on a Graphic Design course for 3 years in Wolverhampton, heart of the Black Country. I met my future wife, Diane, there and after graduating got a job as a free-lance illustrator attached to Artist Partners, a London based illustration agency in 1987.

My first published Who art was in Dreamwatch Bulletin; I submitted a small b&w illustration based on “The Greatest Show in the Galaxy” to the editor of the magazine, Gary Leigh, who then commissioned me for many subsequent pieces accompanying retrospectives for Seasons 25 & 26, illustrations for each Doctor’s all-time classic stories as voted for by the fans and full colour paintings for the Moonbase Photonovel cover, the Horror of Fang Rock and the Jon Pertwee section of DWB’s 30th Anniversary of Doctor Who cover. On the strength of these, Gary Russell offered me some covers for the DWM Classic Comic series (which I foolishly turned down because the pay was a little low – a big regret of mine!).

After that I returned to my staple work of paperback covers (mainly for romantic and historical novels) as commissioned through my London Agency until 2004 when the announcement of Doctor Who’s return goaded me into action. I sent some samples to Clayton Hickman (then editor of DWM) and landed the job of illustrating the “Doctor vs. Doctor” story by Justin Richards in Panini’s 2006 Doctor Who Annual. Since then I’ve contributed to their subsequent Storybooks, providing the Contents page illustration and 17 illustrations for 2 stories this year. I continue to be inspired by the good Doctor and am available for commissions from Ł300 upwards depending upon size and content.

Happy Times and Places!
