Cherilea Mechanoids By Mick Hall www.dalek-mania.co.uk
In 1965 Cherilea toys issued a model of a Dalek and Mechanoid to their range of toys. The Proper version Mechanoid is very rare and the 3 examples shown are the only ones known to exist. However Cherilea re-used the moulds of the Mechanoid body (having been slightly altered) to produce a Space Pod toy for their range of spacemen that were very popular at the time and in fact were produced (along with the Space pod) up until the mid 1970’s. These are the main differences between a Mechanoid and Space pod. The top half of a Mechanoid does not have a hole in its back; the Space pod version does, as this is for a ladder to fit into. The hole in the front of the body for the Flame thrower to fit into (on the Mechanoid) has been filled in on the space pod version. The Mechanoid has a very unique antennae, on the space pod it tends to look like a crosshair sight on a gun. The little base that the Mechanoid sits on is totally different to the Space pod version.
The space pod version has 4 holes for the legs to fit into and 2 further holes in the center for the exhaust to fit into. The arms on the Mechanoid are a reasonable attempt at the real thing, and are molded in one piece. While MOST Space pods tend to have 5 slats on their head and Lugs on the side of the body (as opposed to the Mechanoid, having 10 bars on the head and holes in the side of the body) I have come across a hybrid /crossover version see picture 6.

This Space pod seems to be a crossover version, as it still sports the 10 bars on the head, and holes in the side of the body for the arms. Although the Flamethrower hole is filled in, and it has the hole in the back for the ladder to attach to.
